Micro-needling in a bottle: everything you need to know about bio-spicules
What are (bio-)spicules?
Spicules are becoming increasingly popular within Korean skincare. This innovative technology is formulated into serums, creams, and treatments to enhance the absorption of active ingredients and stimulate the skin.
Bio-spicules are microscopic needles derived from the skeletons of sea sponges. Made from biological material (silica), they are so small that they are invisible to the naked eye. In skincare products, they act as natural micro-needles that temporarily settle into the top layer of the skin.
When you apply a product containing spicules, these tiny needles create microscopic channels in the epidermis (the outermost skin layer). This allows active ingredients—such as niacinamide, peptides, hyaluronic acid, or centella asiatica—to penetrate deeper into the skin and be absorbed more effectively. Because spicules consist of organic material, they are naturally broken down by the body during the skin's cell renewal process and disappear on their own.
What do spicules do?
Spicules offer multiple benefits for the skin, which is why they are increasingly featured in advanced skincare formulations.
1. Enhanced absorption of active ingredients
One of the primary benefits of spicules is their ability to improve skincare absorption. By creating microscopic channels in the upper layer of the skin, active ingredients can easily reach the deeper layers where they work best. This makes key ingredients far more effective than when they simply sit on the surface.
2. Stimulation of skin cell renewal
Beyond improving product absorption, spicules actively stimulate natural cell turnover. The tiny needles provide a mild micro-stimulus to the skin, triggering its natural repair process. During this process, old skin cells are replaced by fresh ones more quickly, promoting a smoother and more even complexion.
3. Refined skin texture
Regular use of spicule products helps refine overall skin texture. The skin feels softer, looks more even, and acquires a healthier appearance. As a result, spicules are frequently used to target dullness, rough skin texture, and fine lines.
4. Support for clogged pores
Thanks to their stimulating and mildly exfoliating action, spicules help clarify pore-prone skin. By accelerating natural cell turnover, they help shed accumulated dead skin cells faster, keeping pores clearer and the skin feeling smoother.
Spicules vs. Microneedling: What's the Difference?
Spicules are often compared to professional microneedling because both techniques stimulate the skin in a controlled manner. However, there are key differences:
Professional microneedling: uses metal needles to intentionally perforate the skin. This is an intensive treatment that works deeper in the dermis and is typically performed by a dermatologist or licensed esthetician.
Bio-spicules: work exclusively in the topmost layer of the skin (the epidermis) and offer a much gentler stimulation. Consequently, spicule products are easy to use safely at home and require little to no recovery time. Note: You may feel a mild tingling or prickling sensation during or after application. This is completely normal and usually fades within a few hours.
Who are spicules suitable for?
Spicules are suitable for most skin types and serve as a powerful addition to an existing skincare routine. They are particularly beneficial for those dealing with:
▸ Dull or fatigued skin
▸ Rough texture
▸ Fine lines
▸ Uneven skin tone
▸ Clogged or enlarged pores
▸ Skin in need of an extra regenerative boost
Tip for sensitive skin: start slowly by using the product just once or twice a week so your skin can comfortably adapt to the stimulating effect of the spicules.
How to use products with spicules
1. Apply the product to clean, dry skin and gently massage it in.
2. A light tingling sensation during application is normal; however, it should never feel painful.
3. Follow up with a hydrating toner, serum, or moisturizer to soothe and nourish the skin.
Frequency of use varies by formula, so always follow the specific instructions on the product label.
Important precautions!
Be mindful of strong actives: although spicules are safe for most users, they temporarily make the skin more permeable and sensitive. Be cautious when combining spicules with potent active ingredients such as retinol, high concentrations of Vitamin C, and exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs). Avoid using these on the same night to minimize the risk of irritation.
Always apply sunscreen: always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 (preferably SPF 50) during the day. Skin can be more sensitive to UV radiation following spicule use, making sun protection essential.
When to avoid: if you have extremely sensitive skin, active rosacea, eczema, or a compromised skin barrier, consult a dermatologist or skin therapist before introducing bio-spicule products into your routine.
